Everything a new model needs to know before stepping onto the runway — from walking technique to backstage etiquette.

Your First Show Is Closer Than You Think

Landing your first runway booking is thrilling — and a little terrifying. Here's how to walk in with confidence and leave with your reputation intact.

1. Master Your Walk

Your walk is your signature. Practice daily in the exact shoes you'll wear on show day. Keep your shoulders back, gaze forward, and let your hips lead. Avoid bouncing — runway walking is smooth and controlled.

Tip: Record yourself from the front, side, and back. Small adjustments make a huge difference on the runway.

2. Know the Call Sheet

A week before the show, you'll receive a call sheet with:

  • Call time and location
  • Hair and makeup direction
  • Fitting schedule
  • Your looks and order of appearance

Read it carefully and arrive 15 minutes early. Tardiness is the quickest way to not be booked again.

3. Backstage Survival Kit

Pack a model essentials bag:

  • Nude underwear and strapless bra
  • Clear strap heels as backup
  • Bobby pins, safety pins, and double-sided tape
  • Snacks and a water bottle
  • A book or headphones for downtime

4. Respect the Team

Designers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, and stage managers all work under intense pressure. Be polite, follow directions, and never complain about your look — even if it's not your favorite. Your professionalism gets you rebooked.

5. After the Show

Thank everyone. Post professionally (tag the designer and agency). And follow up with your booker to request footage and photos for your portfolio.
